Recession: To-Be or Not-To-Be?

by Chase Lee, CFA / in  / on April 4, 2023

Although markets had a decent first quarter, plenty of questions remain unsettled around the fate of inflation and interest rates, whether or not a recession will take hold, and more recently, a bank deposit crisis. Rather than unpack these events in our typical quarterly note, we put it all in episode 4 of our podcast, Doxa Takes. Plus, we were honored to break it all down with Callie Cox, the US investment analyst from eToro. Callie has been featured on CNBC, Bloomberg, the Financial Times, Yahoo Finance, and Barron's. She’s one of the best at making complicated things simple, and combined with the best production to date, episode 4 easily sits on top as our best one yet.

As for an episode preview: We remain optimistic, not in the least part due to the impressive resilience demonstrated by global markets despite significant volatility in interest rates, conflicting economic data, and the recent SVB/FDIC incident. The market's ability to navigate these challenges throughout Q1 is a significant achievement that should not be overlooked as it has changed future market expectations. However, we do appreciate the headwinds created by persistently high inflation and high rates. While these factors can certainly impair corporate earnings in the near term, we also see a few tailwinds emerging that can mitigate some of this well-known pressure from rates and inflation. Further, we are confident in our high-quality fundamental approach, which continues to prove successful in navigating an array of challenges over time.
